How to Clean Your Hot Tub Cover in 6 Simple Steps

Hot tub covers are exposed to the elements all year round, so it’s important you take time to carry out essential maintenance. From strong UV rays to rain, your home spa experiences all the seasons.

When you are looking at hot tubs for sale, think long-term and consider how regular checks will keep your equipment in the best condition for many years to come.

Before you start, it’s essential to know which products to use for maintaining your hot tub cover and how to use them.

6 tips to clean your hot tub cover

Six Essential Tips for Cleaning Your Hot Tub Cover

  1. Remove the cover from the hot tub, then lay it down on a flat surface within easy access of the garden hose.
  2. Rinse the cover with a garden hose on a gentle to moderate setting to loosen any debris from the hot tub cover.
  3. Spray and scrub the cover with an all-purpose vinyl cleaner or a product specifically for hot tub covers. Spray the top of the cover and scrub in circular motions using a cloth or soft-bristled brush.
  4. For routine cleaning of the cover for your hot tub, scrub the top side of the cover with cleaner, then rinse the bottom with water. Be careful to avoid products that contain bleach or alcohol, as these can wear away the cover’s layer of UV and mildew protectant.
  5. Now use the hose to rinse the cover thoroughly. Towel dry it, then let it air dry before reattaching it to the tub. To keep your cover in the best condition, you should clean it once every three months. It’s always best to condition the cover with a UV vinyl protectant after cleaning it.
  6. While standard hot tub covers are made of vinyl, there are some hardcovers made of acrylic that are designed to require little cleaning and maintenance. If pollen, leaves, or other debris piles up, you can simply hose down the hardcover. Only if necessary, you can also use a solution of one part vinegar and one part water to spot clean bird droppings. Alternatively, to spot clean tree sap, rub a cloth with a bit of olive oil over the affected area.

WHEN IS IT TIME TO REPLACE THE HOT TUB COVER?

If you take good care of your hot tub cover, it should last for many years. Even so, in time you will have to look out for tell-tale signs that it needs to be replaced. Does it feel heavy?

This could be due to moisture accumulation, or tears and rips in your cover. Meanwhile, a strong odor is a sign of mold and bacterial growth, likely caused by excess moisture.
