How to Clean Your Hot Tub Filter – 4 Easy Steps

One of the most important steps to keeping your spa running smoothly is regularly cleaning the hot tub filter. The filter has the dirty job of keeping debris and contaminants out of your hot tub.

To keep it doing that very important job, learning how to clean your hot tub filter properly is key.

Our step-by-step guide is easy to follow and will have you cleaning it like a pro in no time.

1. Consider a Spare

While it’s not essential, having two hot tub filters can make your life easier. It’s a great way to ensure your hot tub keeps running if one stops working. It’s also helpful when you perform routine maintenance.

You can pop one in and can immediately put the other in its place so your family can continue using your spa.

2. Water Rinse

Cleaning your hot tub filter once each week is an easy way to keep it performing well. Start by spraying it with a garden hose or rinsing it under the kitchen faucet. Be sure to keep the water temperature cool rather than hot.

As tempting as it may be to blast it with a power washer, attack it with a scrub brush or throw it in the dishwasher for a faster, easier clean, the time you’ll save using any of these won’t be worth it. In fact, they’ll break down the filter’s fibers, shortening its lifespan.

The most effective method is to spray the filter at an angle so the water from your hose or faucet can easily flush in between each of the pleats. This will expel the dirt and debris effectively. Allow the hot tub filter to dry before reinstalling or storing it.

3. Chemical Rinse

Your spa’s filter needs to be carefully cleaned each month with hot tub filter chemicals.

Using a product made exclusively for hot tub filters, spray the cleaner on the filter and let the solution sit for 15 minutes before rinsing the filter clean. Spray thoroughly between the folds to prevent residue, which can cause the hot tub foam to form.

Even if you’re tempted to save some money by using bleach or household cleaners, it won’t be worth it in the long term. Bleach is damaging to the filter’s fibers and will significantly shorten its lifespan.

Household cleaners won’t destroy your filter, but they will cause soap scum, which, in turn, will lead to foamy hot tub water.

4. Chemical Soak

It can be very easy to forget this important filter maintenance step. To ensure it’s done on time, schedule it in each time you change your hot tub’s water, which is usually every three months.

  • Start with a cleaning chemical specifically made for filter soaks and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when mixing it.
  • Place the dirty filter in the solution and allow it to soak overnight or for 24 hours.
  • Be sure to rinse it well with water after the soak is complete and allow it to dry thoroughly.
